There's a trend one can't help but
notice around the area of late. Blazing shades of pink
are dotting the landscape of hundreds of primarily
female heads who have taken the bold step to add streaks
of the untraditional hair color to their locks to show
support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
What started as a local promotion on Facebook has
exploded in the hot trend that's also raising funds for
a good cause. As Shirley Reitmeier, who started
Shirley's BRAdway Show last year and Bras on Broadway to
promote cancer awareness, explains, when Andrea Lien, a
stylist at Rejuv' Salon and Spa, and her mother Patty,
owner of the business, were leaving this year's
installment of the show, Andrea pondered what they could
do to raise funds for the event.
They came up with the idea of offering pink streaks in
the hair for $5 per streak, with proceeds donated to
Shirley's BRAdway Show, which ends up going to the
American Cancer Society for research and awareness of
all types of cancer. With the help of another of the
salon's stylists, Heather Swiers, a Facebook event
called Fighting Fearlessly, Ink Your Hair Pink was
created. People were invited to come into the salon and
get their streaks. The response was phenomenal.
“It just exploded,” Swiers said Wednesday. “We've
already had about 220 people come in and many more are
scheduled to.”
The streaks can be either colored right onto strands or
inserted with extensions made of real hair. The
temporary hair coloring lasts about five to seven
washings. You can choose your preferred shade, from very
light dove pink to raging hot pink. The offer is good
throughout the month of October.
Stylists from the salon are also planning to help apply
the streaks to some 100 people at Northland Community
and Technical College in Thief River Falls, which offers
a cosmetology program, said Reitmeier.
This year's BRAway Show raised $12,000 for the ACS and
funds continue to come in, she said. The Bras on
Broadway has several more bra streamers than last year
and is up this week and next dangling from the former
Eagle Drug building.
Reitmeier also wants to
remind everyone that Friday, Oct. 15, is Real Men Wear
Pink Day. Anyone wishing to purchase a t-shirt with this
message can do so at Erickson Embroidery.

My
name is Shirley, and I am a breast cancer survivor. I
am passionate about spreading the word on how
important it is to get an annual mammogram.
This saved my life by early detection. I know we are
all busy with our lives. Many women put off taking
care of themselves because we make it a priority
to take care of others before ourselves. I too, was
doing this. I was taking care of my son, who
was in a severe motorcycle accident. My life
was consumed with taking care of him and bringing him
to all of his doctor appointments; not leaving much
time for myself. But, I did take the time to
schedule an appointment for my yearly mammogram and
make sure you do your 6 months follow up
appointment if you have one. I’m glad that I did
because it saved my life. Remember this isn’t
just for women, men can have breast cancer also.
So, please put yourself first today and schedule a
mammogram, it might just save your life.
Through this website it is my goal to raise money
for cancer research. Hopefully in the near
future they will find a cure for cancer. With your
donation we will be one step closer in finding a
cure.
